Penally - April 2010 April 2010 After the longest and coldest winter in over thirty years it is a pleasure to say that we hope you are enjoying some Spring sunshine. In this newsletter, as usual, we shall cover all the events which have happened in the last few months and those planned for the future. However, we also want to point out some ways in which eligible members of our community could access the help to which they have a right but which few claim. The country as a whole has an ageing population and Penally reflects that trend. It is important that we recognise the fact and do what we can to support each other but we must also do all we can for ourselves by applying for whatever government help is out there. The first scheme we should like to explain is that of ATTENDANCE ALLOWANCE. This allowance is paid to anyone over 65 who is no longer able to perform some basic personal action and requires help to do it. For instance, this could be caused by lack of mobility, impaired sight or hearing, lapses in memory or any similar lack of function which means that help from another person is required. The exact allowance has a lower level of £47.10 a week and an upper amount of £70.35 per week. The allowance is NOT MEANS TESTED hand does NOT AFFECT YOUR PENSION and is awarded to the individual. That means that it doesn’t matter if you live with a completely able- bodied person. Each application is looked at as an entirely independent issue. Once you have been awarded the allowance, it can be spent on anything you like such as help in the home, taxis or even entertainment…no further checks are made and medical checks are rarely made. However, if an application is turned down, it is unlikely that it will be awarded at a later stage. The form is quite difficult to fill in and Age Concern Staff are no longer allowed to fill it in for you but if you feel that you would qualify and need help with the form please ring one of us and we will find help for you. We are also proposing to organise a village meeting at which we could get together a panel of experts on all the available grant schemes and help which is available through the various agencies. The panel would be able to explain to you exactly what your entitlements are and how to apply for them. Also, please call if you cannot get out of the house; we’ll arrange for the information to come to you. In the February Crow News we asked whether anyone would be interested in forming a new local history association and called a meeting at the end of that month. Fifteen enthusiastic people attended and ideas were pooled. Tony Galvin agreed to act as the initial co-ordinator and a second meeting was held on March 23r.d. It was agreed that the new group will be called PENALLY HISTORY GROUP. Tony has agreed to carry on as Chairman/Co-ordinator and Mavis Lees and Jenny D’Arcy will share the duties of Treasurer. The initial aim of the group is to make a record of the village between 1950 and 2010. To do this we would like to involve all villagers on some level and through our search for information we hope to form a connection between all the groups who follow their own pursuits in the village hall or church rooms. If you have any photographs of the village, of any date, please, either bring them along to our next meeting on April 20th at 7.30pm in the hall or just let us know what you have. We want more people to join us who will add to our store of village memories and, if you would like one of us to call to see you, just ring Tony 844637 Marcia 842878 or Judy 844467 Olivia Argent has temporarily ended her Gentle Exercise Classes in the village hall because of diminishing attendance but her classes continue in Tenby on Tuesday and Friday mornings 10-11am at Church House. Penally residents are welcome to transfer. As has happened so often in the past, a really enjoyable event has come to an end through lack of local support. The Karate Club has met a similar end. However, Penally’s SHORT MAT BOWLING CLUB is always ready to welcome new members both junior and senior. Bowling is an enjoyable, skilful and friendly pastime .The club meets in the hall on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7-10pm and on Wednesday afternoons 2-4.30pm. Junior Bowling is on the second and last Wednesday of the month from 5.30-7pm. Call Clive on 844452 When we held the first St Teilo’s Walk .last year, it was to celebrate the re-launch of the Penally Walks booklet, which had been printed for the village by Planed. We had no idea how successful it would be so we were thrilled when, more than forty people, turned out on a sunny day. In announcements about last and this year’s walk we had called it St Teilo’s DAY Walk but it has been pointed out to us that St Teilo’s Day is actually on February 9th. . Maybe it was St Teilo himself who decided to chastise us for our mistake by sending the worst possible weather for this year’s walk on April 6th. Only twelve people were brave enough to join the National Park Rangers who once again acted as leaders and instructors about the military involvement in the village.We had not been optimistic about the success of the walk when the wind , lashing rain and snow started on March 30th (what happened to March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.?) but we went ahead with our plans and once again delicious cakes were baked and happily consumed by the brave dozen. Our thanks go to all who contributed. Two more very successful EXTRA craft mornings were held on March 24th and 31st when Iris Taylor organised a group of sixteen people (as many as she could comfortably handle) to produce beautiful cushions decorated with a Sweet Pea design. The regular CRAFT GROUP which meets every Wednesday morning in the village hall at 10am has just come to the end of another of the free courses offered by Pembrokeshire College. This time the emphasis was on silk painting and some beautiful pieces were produced. The next course, which will again be Silk Painting, will begin April 28th and run until June 23rd with a break for half term. Those who did the first course will take the skill a little further, but first time students can start from scratch and are welcome. If you would like to know more ring Judy on 844467 PENALLY MOTHER’S UNION is also involved in craft, knitting balaclavas for the Seaman’s Mission in Milford Haven. It seems that many foreign ships put into port there with hands from all over the world who are quite unprepared for cooler climates and have no suitable clothing. The Mission is always grateful for donations of thick sweaters, long johns and knitted headwear. Mary Ball says that she has wool and patterns for anyone who would like to start knitting for this cause- ring Mary844896 On April 28th the Mothers’ Union will welcome Mrs Ann Gill who is the Diocesan President who will give a talk on THE THREE R’s in AFRICA. Penally MU has for some time been collecting contributions of tooth brushes and paste, towels soap etc. All of which will be given to Mrs Gill in aid of the Night Stop charity which helps unfortunate people who find themselves homeless. May 26th Nigel Griffin who is currently Chaplain at Morriston hospital and who was a former Penally resident will be giving a talk about his work. The following month, there will be two events of interest on consecutive days. On June 26th. Deacon, Marianne Osborne, who lives in Penally vicarage, will be ordained as a priest at a ceremony in St David’s Cathedral and the following day , June 27th at 10am, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, will be preaching in St Mary’s Church as part of the 800year anniversary of the church. New MU members are always welcome, just ring Val Paley 843774 On Saturday May 8th we shall be holding our second WHIST DRIVE. It doesn’t matter whether you have played before or not. It takes five minutes to learn and is great fun. Why not leave the telly for one night and join us for a few hours at 7p.m in the hall. Once again, Mrs Barnikel has agreed to organise us into some semblance of order. For the keener card players amongst us, PENALLY BRIDGE CLUB goes from strength to strength on Monday afternoons, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. In fact, they celebrated their first anniversary on March 22nd with a glass or two of wine replacing the customary cups of tea. Most abilities are catered for and if you are a solo player a partner will always be found. Just ring Margaret Davies on 844461 The Hall Committee is always trying to update the facilities in the hall and a system has been installed to make sure that in freezing weather an empty hall is automatically provided with a minimal heat level. A picture rail has been fitted all around the walls and cork boards and hooks have been purchased so that notices can be displayed. In the past, despite printed requests for people not to do so, the walls have been marked by people fixing signs with sticky tape and Blutac. Such actions are difficult to police when the hall is available for public hire. Penally WI, holds meetings in the village hall on the 2nd TUESDAY of every month at 2.15pm. We’ve emphasised the day here because last month we made a mistake. Sorry WI. Their forthcoming events are;- 13th April, Nikki Bosworth of the County Records Office in Haverfordwest will be speaking on Pembrokeshire’s Past. 11th May Joanne Morton from the Paul Sartori Foundation will be explaining how the organization works. The June meeting will be the annual outing – destination not arranged yet. New members and visitors always welcome. Full details of the new classifications will appear in our next newsletter, but they will still include most crafts and most plant, vegetable and fruit growing. We hope more children will take part and that it will turn out to be the happy social occasion that it has always been. A VACANCY has arisen for a new VILLAGE WARDEN who will be responsible for keeping the village tidy. In the past this has come under the Community Council’s control but the new post will be under Pembrokeshire County Council who will specify the duties, hours and wages and provide all equipment. Any fit person who would like to apply should look out for advertisements on notice boards around the village and in the village shop. Penally - February 2010 February 2010 On another cold winter day we, belatedly, wish you all a Happy New Year and look forward to more enjoyable village get-togethers in 2010. By the time you receive this newsletter, a few of the regular activities will have already started but that doesn’t mean that there is no space for new people to join in. On Wednesday mornings, the CRAFT group has once again taken advantage of a free course offered by Pembrokeshire College. This term they are tackling Silk Painting. It may sound exotic but no particular skill in painting or drawing is required in order to take part. Contact Judy on 844467 if you want more information On Thursday afternoons , from 2-3p.m Olivia Argent continues with her GENTLE EXERCISE CLASSES for both men and women. Everyone welcome at any time but you need to pay, in advance, for a £12 block of four sessions to cover the hire of the hall. Contact Olivia on 843828 On Friday January 22nd there was another enjoyable Quiz Night in the village hall with 14 tables of four taking part. Unfortunately we were unable to publicise the event in the last newsletter because it was arranged after Christmas for a date suitable to the two ladies who devise the questions. They put in so much work and we are extremely grateful. We hope to have another quiz soon. Penally’s SHORT MAT BOWLING CLUB meets in the hall on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7-10p.m and Wednesday afternoons from 2-4.30p.m. JUNIOR BOWLING is on the second and last Wednesday of the month from 5.30-7p.m. New members welcome. Penally Carol Choir met from September and ended on a high with a special buffet evening on Dec.18th. Our regular choir leader Marion had to leave us after a few weeks for medical reasons but we were fortunate in our being able to persuade Andrew Cusworth to take her place. We had been invited by the Community Council, to join the parents and children gathered around the Christmas tree on the green to welcome Father Christmas but the evening proved so cold that activities were transferred to the hall where everyone was able to join in the singing and Father Christmas with his bag of goodies found us there in the warm. We’d like to register here the thanks of the village to the Community Council for the beautiful fairy lights which they put up (and paid for) on the outside of the hall. We understand that the display will be even grander next year. PENALLY BRIDGE CLUB continues to meet every Monday afternoon in the village hall from 1.15 to 4.30p.m.with four to five tables in play. Both Duplicate and Chicago are played according to the number of players. Partners can always be found. Any stage of ability catered for and help offered by Mags Davies (Premier Regional Master) . If you are interested in learning to play or you want to find a Bridge partner ring Mags on 844416. Last autumn someone suggested that we arrange a WHIST DRIVE. We did so and, whilst it was really enjoyable, it was very poorly attended. Some of the blame must rest with us for arranging it on the same night as Halloween (duh!!) so we are going to give it another go and hold the next one in the hall at 7.30p.m on Saturday May 8th. Most of the people who attended the last one had never played before but picked it up in a few minutes. Those of you who took part in the inaugural St TEILO’S DAY WALK last year will agree that it was a huge success with over forty people taking part. The next one will be on the Tuesday after Easter, April 6th. As before, the walk will be lead by Kiri Howell (South Community Ranger) and this time she will follow a different route featured on the Penally Walks leaflet which will take in the Firing Range and cliff top. On this occasion, Kiri will be accompanied by a National Park Ranges Warden, who has considerable historical knowledge regarding the Range and military involvement in our village. We are assured that no firing will take place on that day. Meet up in the village hall at 2p.m (wearing suitable wet weather clothing and footwear if it is raining) and meet back in the hall for tea, delicious cakes and a chat . If anyone wants to do just a portion of the walk and wait for the others to return, they are free to return to the hall at any time for a cup of tea. We are all looking forward with great enthusiasm to the EXOTIC PUDDING NIGHT which has been suggested and will be run by Iris Taylor. We are hoping that all the eager cooks among us as well as just the eager pudding eaters will attend. No date fixed yet. We’ll keep you informed. Before Christmas, Iris also ran a very successful patchwork class over two sessions, when Christmas wall hangings were made. A similar workshop, this time to make a SWEET-PEA CUSHION COVER is planned for the two Wednesdays before Easter, March 24th and 31st. Everything will be provided but a small charge will be made to cover materials and the hire of the hall (the more people who attend, the lower the cost,. but around £5 is likely). Ring Judy on 844467 or Linda on 844727 to book your place. This is just a preliminary notice about the annual CRAFT & HORTICULTURE SHOW, which will be held in the hall on Saturday August 7th. We’ll give full details at a later date because there will be a few changes in classifications and judging this year. Just start growing and crafting. One new class will be for the submission of ideas for a Penally Christmas card. Last year we were a bit slow off the mark so this year we want to get it into production in September. Did anyone take advantage of the recent snow to get some photographs? Now, who would be interested in forming a Penally Local History Society? As yet, the idea is just that, but a starting point could be Margaret Davies’s wonderful book A Murder of Crows. The book covered many topics in the story of Penally’s past but every day that passes creates more “past” and it all needs to be added and recorded. The village memories of a few long term residents were tape-recorded many years ago but not everyone was approached and Margaret Davies has long wanted to add some information to her text and correct a few errors. It would be interesting to try to produce booklets, which would add to what is already there. As a trial run we are holding a meeting in the village hall on Tuesday February 23rd at 7.30p.m. Come along and help us form a society. MOTHERING SUNDAY in the church is on March 14th at 9.30a.m and EASTER DAY service will be on April 4th at 9.30a.m. In later issues of the newsletter, we shall be able to give you information of two new church initiatives, which would welcome your financial support. Briefly, they concern plans to take back use of the garden which until recently has been used as an allotment and to turn it into a landscaped Garden of Remembrance because the current area is now too small. The second plan is to increase comfort in the church itself by adding some suitable glass doors at the main entrance. The notification stated that the purpose of the meeting was to invite ideas about future developments of the service based on current usage. Penally - November 2009 November 2009 As we approach the Christmas season we are aware that some people will be more than usually busy with preparations for the holiday but maybe this is also a good time for reviewing what has recently happened in Penally and what is planned for the new year. First of all, it was a little disappointing that only twenty or so villagers took advantage of the evening meeting at which the local Police and Fire Service offered advice on how we can all keep safer in our homes. It proved to be an extremely interesting and enlightening event that demonstrated how fortunate we are in this area to have such a low level of crime (i.e only 10 burglaries a month in the whole of Pembrokeshire). It also illustrated how much free help is available in an effort to prevent fires and criminal intent. Valuable advice was given on how to deal with “Distraction” Burglars who may pose convincingly as Gas, Electricity or Water Board officials. The rule is – Do not let anybody into your house if you have the slightest doubt. Even official-looking credentials can these days be faked on a computer. Do not telephone the number offered to you by the caller to verify his credentials. His friend is probably on the other end of the line!!. The Bobby Van Scheme, which we mentioned in the last newsletter, provides advice and the free fitting of locks, spy holes and other security systems for anyone over sixty or who is vulnerable. Ring 101 and ask for the Bobby Van. Attached, you will find a leaflet provided by the Fire Service which we would urge you to fill in and return as a request for a free fire safety check. It is not sufficient to pin up a few fire alarms and forget about them. As was emphasized at the meeting, no home with FUNCTIONING fire alarms ever had a fatality. Make sure your batteries work by tapping the button on the alarm with a walking stick or the nozzle on your vacuum cleaner. We are all guilty of overloading our electrical points through ignorance, especially at Christmas time when fairy lights, music systems and TVs are added to the same source of power. Have you worked out and practised a method of escape for your whole family should fire break out? Penally Village Hall Committee is trying to find new ways of raising money for its maintenance but the hall is only there to serve the village community and if events are not supported then there is no reason for its existence. The CARD MAKING CLASS run by Pembrokeshire College earlier in the year was very popular and it was a blow to hear that it could not continue due to the ill health of the tutor however, an alternative of DECORATIVE GLASS PAINTING was offered and gladly accepted. This free class takes place on Wednesday mornings from 10a.m. to noon. From noon until 2p.m. the existing members have organized a general CRAFT session and take it in turns to demonstrate and teach the various skills which they have. Glass Painting lessons will end on November 25th. On the following Wednesdays (Dec 2nd and 9th) from 10a.m.-1p.m, Mrs Iris Taylor, who is a master craftswoman, has agreed to demonstrate her skills by helping you to make a CHRISTMAS WALL HANGING. Attendance at this will need to be booked in advance and will cost £3 for the materials, which will be provided. However a small additional charge will have to be made to cover the hire costs of the hall. For more information and to book, please ring Judy on 844467 or Linda on 844727. The classes run by the College are part of the STEP Project, which is funded by The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. It enables communities across Pembrokeshire to access free quality learning opportunities at local community venues. People can find it difficult to come to college to gain qualifications and one of the main aims of the STEP project is to remove barriers to learning. That is why all courses are free, all materials are free and what is more FREE CHILDCARE or ELDERCARE can be provided if needed. Other classes offered include Food Safety Level 2, Sugar Craft, Computer Classes, Silk Painting, Introduction to Working with Children, Line Dancing and Interior Design. All courses offer nationally recognised qualifications. If you would be interested in any of the above ring Judy on 844467 and we shall endeavour to set one up. N.B. Last year when we asked people what activities they would like us to arrange, top of the list was an exercise class, We persuaded Olivia Argent to add Penally to her programme of GENTLE EXERCISE CLASS FOR MEN AND WOMEN and they have been running on Thursday’s from 3pm to 4pm.However, numbers have recently reduced and maybe this is because of the time slot. Mothers who needed to collect children from school found it difficult, so we are changing the time to 2pm – 3pm. To make sure the hall hire charges are covered, classes have to be paid for in four week blocks costing £12 for the four, but it still requires around ten people to make it worthwhile. PENALLY BRIDGE CLUB meets in the village hall every Monday afternoon at 2p.m. New members always welcome ring Margaret on 844416. Help given to new learners. Our attempt at forming a new club took place on October 30th when Mrs Pauline Barnikel organized a WHIST evening. We were unfortunate in that we had chosen a date in the half term holiday, when people were attending Halloween parties and on which it was raining heavily. However, we were just able to make up three tables with the help of three visitors. Huge thanks must go to Mrs Barnikel who did a splendid job in getting a group of virtual non-players to a competitive frame of mind. No local person approached us with regard to making Whist Drives a regular event but we shall probably give it another go some time in the future. The 25th Anniversary of the building of the existing village hall took place on October 20th. Most of the clubs that use the hall had arranged excellent displays to illustrate the activities that they enjoy. There was also an extensive display of all the village archives together with many photographs of past events. Between 10am and 4pm there was a steady stream of visitors who enjoyed reminiscing and chatting over tea and cake. The afternoon ended with the cutting of a beautiful cake presented by Derek Thomas. Last September the village school, which, since its closure as a Junior School has been taken over by the Pembrokeshire Behavioural Support Unit, held an Open Day so that the general public could see the improvements to the building and grounds. For those who attended it was a truly uplifting experience to see the amount of care, attention and love which is now given to the pupils who are placed there for a huge variety of reasons including disability, social and emotional difficulties. The Karate Club for adults and children, which had to stop for a short time is re-starting on Sunday mornings from November 8th. Ring James for more information on 07541 348 269 The MOTHERS’ UNION will meet in the Church Room on November 25th at 2.30p.m. and the speaker will be Councillor Carol Cavill. On December 4th the ADVENT LUNCH in the Church Room will take place from noon –2p.m. On Tuesday December 22nd at 7p.m., CAROLS and 9 LESSONS will be celebrated in the church and this will be the 50th anniversary of the event. Dec 24th at 6.30 the church will welcome whole families to a CRIB SERVICE at which children will be encouraged to understand the symbol of the crib and to participate in the service with their own dolls and cribs. PENALLY W.I will be holding its AGM on the second Tuesday in November in the hall at 2.15p.m. Although this will primarily be a discussion of past WI business and the handing over of offices, any new member is welcome to attend. For both items ring 843326 CAROL CHOIR resumed on October 13th and this year we are attempting to sing several pieces that are entirely new to most of us.Our main problem is that Marion, our choir mistress, has to undergo knee surgery between now and Christmas and we are really desperate to find someone who could fill in for what we hope will be the short time she is off.Luckily our search may be over because Andrew Cusworth, the Parish Administrator and deputy Organist at St Mary’s has, more or less, agreed to take us on. He has been warned that we make no claims regarding vocal ability and hilarity is often our response to our own efforts but we hope that he will be brave enough to give it a go. As we have said many times before this is a “for fun “ Choir and anyone is welcome to join us on Tuesday evenings at 7.30p.m If you need a lift on dark nights something can usually be arranged. Once again we shall join the parents and children around the Christmas tree on the village green to sing carols and welcome Father Christmas on Dec 18th at 6p.m. Immediately following that we shall return to the hall for the Choir’s Christmas Buffet and Musical Evening. August 2009 Well, how did your summer go? Once again we have reached the time of year when parents are buying new school uniforms; we are dead-heading the roses and our thoughts are turning towards autumn pastimes. In the last Penally Village Hall Committee meeting, emphasis was placed on preparing as varied and useful a programme of events as possible. Before we list them, we just want to thank everyone who helped to make the Horticultural and Craft show such a success and to congratulate all the worthy winners. Raffle prizes, were very generously provided by Manorbier Garden Centre and Sandyhill Garden Centre. Our thanks also go to Kiln Park who funded all the money prizes for the children’s competitions. In the June Crow News, we mentioned PCSO Mandy Goodland and her interest in reviving the Neighbourhood Watch scheme. If you tried to contact her and found difficulty it may have been due to our missing a “dash” in her e mail address. We should have put mandy.goodland@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk but her phone numbers were correct. However, on Wednesday Sept. 30th at 7pm we would like to invite you to the hall for a Coffee evening at which Mandy and her colleagues will discuss how such a scheme would work and how we can all make ourselves safer in our homes. She will be joined by representatives from the Dyfed Powys Police Bobby Van Scheme who will provide advice and arrange for security systems to be fitted to the homes of vulnerable residents free of charge. There will also be a representative from the Fire Service. If you are unable to attend you can ring these numbers for information. Police 101, Bobby Van 101, Fire Service 0800 169 1234. It is important that these matters of safety are addressed before the dark evenings close in around us and anyway, we’d just like to meet you for coffee and a chat. As you may know, when Penally School closed as a Junior School, it was taken over by Pembrokeshire Behaviour Support Service and now provides specialised support for pupils with learning difficulties, which can result from social, emotional, behavioural or medical issues. Pupils range from 4 years to 19 years of age and they would like to invite you to an OPEN DAY on Thursday September 24th between 2pm and 7pm. Take this opportunity to look around the newly decorated school building and grounds and enjoy some cake and tea. OLIVIA ARGENT will resume her very popular gentle exercise classes for men and women in the hall on Thursday September 24th from 3pm-4pm.Once again they will be offered in four week blocks which need to be booked and paid for in advance. No experience needed just loose clothing. Ring Olivia on 843828 LADIES’ and GIRLS’ SELF DEFENCE CLASSES. James Masterman has started these by request and runs them 10am -11am on Tuesday mornings. His SHOTOKAN KARATE class suitable for adults and children takes place on the same day 6.30pm-8-30pm. Ring 07541 348269 Pembrokeshire College will once again run the CARD MAKING CLASS for eight weeks starting Wednesday September 30th between 10 am and 12am. Classes will run for four weeks until half term which is Oct.26th –30th. The last class will be on Nov 25th.This free course is so much more than the title suggests and new members who enjoy handicrafts are always welcome. Ring Judy on 844467 for information. It has also been suggested that a further group be developed to learn how to do a variety of crafts from patchwork to painting, with perhaps a trial day of each. If you are interested in learning something new or improving what you already do or teaching what you are good at, let us know. In fact, come to a coffee morning on Wednesday September 23rd in the hall at 10am and bring with you samples of any craft that you enjoy. SHORT MAT BOWLING resumed on August 3rd and continues every Monday and Thursday evening 7pm-10pm. Junior Bowls is on the second and last Wednesday of the month 5.30 –7pm. They would welcome new members of any age. Ring Clive on 844452. On Friday September 11th there will be an afternoon SILENT AUCTION in the hall from 2pm – 4pm. Donations of items (not clothes or electrical) should be given to Mavis Lees. Please search your homes for items that you may no longer want but for which someone else might pay good money …money, which will go towards the upkeep of the hall. It should be an enjoyable afternoon with refreshments. Ring Mavis on 845345 Since the successful start of the Bridge Club, various people have suggested that Whist might be a popular so on Friday October 30th at 7p.m, we are holding a WHIST DRIVE in the hall. Depending on the degree of enthusiasm shown on that occasion, a more regular club could be established possibly to run alongside the bridge on a Monday afternoon. Mrs Barnikel has kindly agreed to run the first one but after that we are on our own. If there is a village resident who might be prepared to help run a more regular whist drive please contact us. Ring Linda on 844727 to register your interest. This year, we shall be celebrating the 25th ANNIVERSARY of the establishment of the village hall. A series of displays in the hall will record the events of the last twenty five years and also the current activities, which help to keep it a busy and vibrant meeting place. Included will be the historical documents left to the village by the late Leslie Edwards. The Army Camp will be putting on a display which will illustrate the history of their involvement with the village and village photographs and scrapbooks will be well worth scrutiny. Join us on October 20th between 10am and 4pm for a cup of tea, a walk down memory lane or to find out more about future events. The BRIDGE CLUB continues every Monday afternoon between 2pm and 4.30pm and has been the beneficiary of a few more traditional card tables, which were much needed. It seems that some people are under the impression that this is a club devoted to beginners only. This is not the case. As in any club, members vary in skill levels but several people who expressed an interest in learning the game have been welcomed and given personal help and encouragement by Margaret, to get them up to speed. New members of any standard are always welcome, however, Margaret will be away on a cruise for part of September and Mike will be in charge. Ring Margaret on 844416 At the moment it looks as though the CAROL CHOIR will start again on Wednesday October 7th at 7.30 pm. Tuesdays have been taken by Karate so we have had to switch days. This means that choir will meet on the first, third and fourth Wednesday in the month ONLY, because the Council meets in the hall on the second Wednesday. However these details may change nearer the time and we shall make sure we inform all last year’s members of any developments. On the good side, it may allow people who couldn’t come last year to join us. However, I must emphasise that this is a FOR FUN choir and a singing ability is the very last requirement. VILLAGE SERVICES is the space for trades/craftsmen who live in the village. (1)Chris Little offers general home maintenance and gardening. Although Marianne is not directly responsible for the village, we shall look forward to welcoming her and her family at forthcoming village events. Marianne points out that her husband is a retired carpenter who is now partially sighted so if you see him across the road, shout loudly because he may not see you. June 2009 Summer greetings to all our readers and especially to our new readers in Oakridge Acres. Although Oakridge Acres is not strictly in Penally, we already get support for our various activities from some Oakridge residents so we have decided to include you in our newsletter delivery and we hope that you will make your way across the causeway to join us, especially when later in the year our new programme starts. We wait so long in anticipation of summer, looking for signs of the predicted heat wave but apart from the ever growing grass it is sometimes hard to believe that on the 21st of this month we shall have the longest day. So before we start to turn our thoughts to autumn, this is going to be a short reminder of what will happen in Penally over the holiday period PENALLY BRIDGE CLUB is still going strong every Monday afternoon from 2pm to 4.30pm. Three tables are regularly in play. Even if you are a complete novice but would just like to see if you have a “bridge brain”, you would be welcome. Some of the regulars started from scratch. It is run by Margaret Davies and she can be contacted on 844416 The SHOTOKAN KARATE CLASS is trying to build up its membership. It is a wonderful exercise and confidence- building activity, suitable for adults and children from 7 years of age. It is run by James Masterman, who can be contacted on 07541348269. James hopes to put information leaflets in the local schools to encourage more support. The classes run every Tuesday evening in the village hall from 6.30 pm-8.30pm. Go along for a trial session. The CARD MAKING class run by Pembrokeshire College started a second season on April 29th and it is obviously so enjoyable that all the original members are keen to see it continue. It runs in sessions of eight weeks and at the end of the current one there will be a break for the holidays and restart in September. If you fancy learning a new decorative craft, which produces a variety of handmade gifts, contact Judy on 844467 or Linda on 844727. Also restarting in September will be Olivia Argent’s EXERCISE CLASSES. We’ll keep you informed of details in the next newsletter. PENALLY W.I which usually meets in the village hall on the second Tuesday of the month is now entering its summer “out and about “ phase with members going on outings to St Fagans Castle on June 8th and various gardens of interest. New members are always welcome and the Hon. Sec Betty Ramsay on 843198 can tell you all about their plans or you can see posters in the village shop (will we ever stop calling it the post office??). Meetings in the village hall will resume in September. SHORT MAT BOWLING is taking a summer break but will restart in September however, should any young person between the ages of 10 and 16 like to have a trial run during the holidays just ring Clive on 844452 PENALLY OPEN HORTICULTURAL & CRAFT SHOW will be held on Saturday August 8th in the village hall and will include a celebration of the re-siting of Penally Village School Bell in the hall. The show will be opened by the last Headmaster of Penally School, Mr Graham Doney. Many of his past pupils and their parents will no doubt be very pleased to see him again. This is a light hearted event designed to bring the village together and has competitive classes in Flower Arrangements, Flowers, Art, Craft, Cookery, Preserves and Fruit and Vegetables. Entries are invited from adults and children and more details of rules can be obtained from either Jenny D’Arcy on 844169 or from leaflets available in the village shop. The most important bits to remember are that the hall will be open between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on the previous Friday evening for forms to be submitted if you want to enter more than one class. Otherwise doors open on the Saturday at 9am and exhibits, must be staged by 10.30am because judging will take place at 11am. Doors open again at 2.30pm and prizes will be awarded at 3.15pm. Just remember that this is a village fun event and that taking part is more important than winning so please support it if you can. PCSO No 83 Mandy Goodland is keen to restart the village NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEME whereby we all take moderate steps to ensure our mutual safety. If you think that this is a good idea and would like some more information you can telephone Mandy on 0845 330 2000 or on the much simpler number 101. This is the number for a NON URGENT call to the police as opposed to the better known 999. Penally - Autumn 2008 We are three new recruits to the Penally Village Hall Committee. In talking about how to foster more support for the hall we realised that our first task was to find a reliable way to get information to every household in the village. Some villagers do not read a local newspaper so we are attempting to revive the VILLAGE NEWSLETTER. This will rely on a team of local people to deliver it, by hand in the main village, and outlying villagers could receive it by e mail. We are not experts in the newsletter field (and would welcome support from anyone who is) but we shall do our best. At this stage we are not sure how regular the newsletter will be, however, if we are to do it in a meaningful way, we need your help.  We need you to tell us about anything which has happened recently or which will happen in the future and which would be of general interest.  We need you to tell us how you think the village could improve and most importantly, what YOU are prepared to do to achieve change. The format of this newsletter is not necessarily the one we shall follow in future issues. That, will be dictated by the feedback we get from you. In Penally we are blessed by having a well equipped, warm, village hall and also the Church Room in which to gather, however, the hall is underused. Its finances and indeed its future will depend on greater use by new groups of people who want to get together to follow an activity of mutual interest. At the moment the regular users are only the Bowling Club and the Village Carol Choir but any activity needs members who will support it on a reasonably regular basis. Please let us know what your interests are. Would you like to start a new club, learn a new skill or just meet up in a social setting with like-minded people? Would you choose to support morning, afternoon or evening events? QUIZ NIGHTS run by the Hall Committee have always been popular. Would you like more of them? The next is on November 21st at 7.30p.m. The new PENALLY WALKS leaflet produced by Planed is now available and the way markers are now in position for people to easily follow the path. Would you be interested in forming a walking group that ends with tea and a chat in the village hall? Penally SCRABBLE CLUB meets every Monday at 2p.m. in the Church Room. Anyone who would enjoy a friendly game and a cup of tea is most welcome to join in. A GARDENING CLUB was started but fizzled out after a few meetings. Maybe it would have been more successful if the aim had been to run it for a specific and shorter period at a different time of year. We have already had a suggestion about a regular WHIST DRIVE. Would you support it? What about BRIDGE, would you like to learn or could you teach it? Our County Councillor Carol Cavill has been approached by a village in Brittany about its possible TWINNING with Penally. We'd like to hear from anyone with experience of twinning who would be prepared to help this idea to fruition. The CAROL CHOIR which meets every Tuesday night at 7.30 is doing well and has been invited by the Community Council to sing on December 19* at the gathering on the Village Green when the lights on the tree will be lit and Father Christmas will greet the children present. The choir is a purely for fun activity, requires no singing ability and recognises that members are not able to attend every week. The intention was to run just until Christmas but there is now a suggestion that interested members could continue in the New Year with a different form of singing such as SONGS FROM THE SHOWS. Details still need to be discussed. Might that include you? The BOWLING CLUB meets on Monday and Thursday evenings 7p.m-10p.m and on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4.30p.m. New members are always welcome. We are currently investigating the possibilities of FREE, EIGHT WEEK CRAFT COURSES run by Pembrokeshire College and hope to start one in January. The newly formed St Nicholas & St Teilo CHURCH CHOIR also rehearses on a Tuesday evening (7.30-8-30p.m.) but in the Church Room. They lead worship normally once a month and sing church and contemporary music. New singers always welcome. It will work on this basis: If you have an item which you no longer want but which may be of use to someone else we shall try to include it in the newsletter. We recognise that younger people are so busy earning a living that they probably don't have time to think about spare time activities but we welcome ideas from them or even from the children who live amongst us. Ultimately, we all need to come closer to our neighbours so that we can offer and expect support and maybe combat the loneliness which many people feel. At one time, when a tidal causeway separated Penally from Tenby and the sea flooded all the way to St Florence, Penally Crows depended very much on their own devices.
